Three unidentified youths are reportedly on the radar of authorities following a flash demonstration in Chinhoyi calling for the release from prison of Zanu PF Central Committee member Mike Chimombe.

The youths are said to have mounted two banners at different spots, with a clear message “FREE MIKE CHIMOMBE 2030”.

The trio, which is captured on viral pictures circulated on WhatsApp this Saturday morning, are now said to be in hiding after State agents reportedly descended on Pfungwadzakana Shopping Centre in Chikonohono in search of them.

NewsAnchor visited the scene Saturday afternoon and gathered that the known youths could have been taking instructions from elsewhere.

“The youths captured in those viral pictures frequent local drinking spots here at Pfungwadzakana, but they have retreated after learning that some suspicious men were hunting for them,” a bar attendant told NewsAnchor.

Chimombe, who hails from Chikonohono suburb, was recently sentenced to 12 years in prison for his involvement in a US$87 million Presidential Goat Scheme tender fraud case. He is currently serving his sentence at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison and has appealed the verdict.

The demo highlights the ongoing political tensions surrounding Chimombe’s case.
