Vice President General (Retired) Dr Constantino Chiwenga is set to travel to Kampala, Uganda, where he will represent President Emmerson Mnangagwa at President Yoweri Museveni’s inauguration on Tuesday.
Zimbabwe is among 35 countries expected to attend the swearing-in and inauguration ceremony at the Kololo Independence Ceremonial Grounds in Kampala.
Zimbabwe’s Deputy Ambassador to Uganda, Silibaziso Manyonga, confirmed the Vice President’s itinerary.
“I am here on behalf of Ambassador Winpeg Moyo, the Ambassador of Zimbabwe to Kenya and Uganda,” said Manyonga.
I am here to welcome the Honourable Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga, who is coming here, where he will represent His Excellency, President Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa, at the inauguration of His Excellency, President Yoweri Museveni, to be held on Tuesday.
Museveni, 81, who ran as the ruling NRM party’s candidate, won the 15 January presidential election with 7,946,772 votes — 71.6 per cent — according to the Electoral Commission.
His closest challenger, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, better known as Bobi Wine of the National Unity Platform, received 2,741,238 votes. Nathan Nandala Mafabi of the Forum for Democratic Change came third with 209,039 votes.
The five other contenders retired General Gregory Mugisha Muntu of the Alliance for National Transformation, Frank Bulira of the Revolutionary People’s Party, Robert Kasibante of the National Peasants Party, Mubarak Munyagwa of the Common Man’s Party and Joseph Mabirizi of the Conservative Party each polled fewer votes than the 275,353 ballots declared invalid.
This week’s swearing-in and inauguration ceremony marks the start of President Museveni’s seventh term in office.
