World Food Programme (WFP) has handed over nine vehicles worth US$229,905 to the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare to improve the delivery of social protection and food assistance services across Zimbabwe.
The fleet, which includes five Toyota Prados and four Land Cruisers, was handed over during a ceremony in Harare on Thursday, attended by Public Service Minister Edgar Moyo and WFP Country Director Barbra Clemens.
Clemens said the vehicles were more than just transportation assets but a key investment in strengthening government capacity to serve vulnerable communities.
“These vehicles will help strengthen the ministry’s ability to reach communities across the country, deliver essential social protection and assistance services, and respond effectively to the needs of vulnerable households,” said Clemens.
She added that the demand for social protection and food assistance was increasing, making reliable mobility essential for timely and effective programme delivery.
According to NewZimbabwe, the WFP also donated digital media equipment to enhance the ministry’s communication systems, improve accountability, and help document progress in delivering social welfare programmes.
Accepting the vehicles, Minister Moyo commended WFP for its consistent support, saying the donation would improve government efforts to close gaps in service delivery.
“We rest assured that the ministry will ensure that these vehicles are put to good use and managed according to government policies and regulations.
“Priorities shall be given to the hard-to-reach areas in a bid to leave no one and no place behind,” Moyo said.
The donation is expected to enhance the implementation of social protection programmes and support Zimbabwe’s broader development agenda under Vision 2030.
