The Harare City Council has engaged its subsidiary, City Parking, to revamp Mbare Musika bus terminus to world class standards.
This comes after the council reclaimed the bus terminus from some politically-connected vigilante groups and space barons who had grabbed the facility for own use.
City Parking is a company wholly owned by City of Harare and was given the mandate to upgrade Mbare Musika bus terminus after successfully rehabilitating Rufaro Stadium.
Harare Council spokesperson Stanley Gama told NewsDay that the local authority deliberately awarded the contract to City Parking to leverage on internal resources.
“City of Harare’s Mbare Musika urban renewal project is now in motion after a long wait.
“City Parking, a company100% owned by council shall finance and manage the project as council looks inward and opts to use internal resources,” Gama said.
Gama said the council once mandated City Parking to rehabilitate Mbare Musika bus termini in 2014 but faced resistance from political vigilante groups and other disgruntled elements who were benefiting from the porous system at the expense of residents.
He added that sufficient security measures have been put in place to safeguard the equipment after the vigilante groups back then vandalised the facility as part of efforts to sabotage the project.
Gama said the project scope includes upgrading of existing structures and facilities which include toilets, paving, boundary walls, waiting sheds and sitting areas.
“It shall also cover construction of shops around the terminus, installation of electronic entry and exit boom gates, installation of solar systems, enhancement of security systems, signage, landscaping and beautification of the surrounding areas.
“This project is set to transform the face of Mbare township and improve revenue generation for council owing to the investment by the council owned entity,” Gama said.
