Doctor Kondo and Kernisha Hunzwi Face Trial Over Alleged Fraudulent Medical Letter in Custody Case

A Harare-based medical practitioner, Dr. Micky Kondo, is now jointly charged alongside Kernisha Sheila Hunzwi in a case involving allegations of fraud and defeating the ends of justice.

The two have been served with summons to appear for trial on 3 April at the Harare Magistrates Court, marking a significant development in a criminal matter that has attracted growing public and professional scrutiny.

According to the State, the charges stem from an incident in which Dr. Kondo authored a medical letter in support of a High Court child custody dispute involving a client he had neither previously known nor examined. It is alleged that Hunzwi visited his practice at Eastgate Mediclinic and paid US$500 for a consultation—an amount that was formally receipted and presented by her to the police.

Prosecutors contend that following the consultation, Hunzwi obtained a letter purportedly written by Dr. Kondo, crafted to bolster her position in the ongoing custody proceedings. Her lawyer, Shepard Ringoziva works for the doctor she consulted. The document allegedly contained claims relating to a businessman central to the dispute, raising concerns about its authenticity and the circumstances under which it was produced.

The State further alleges that Hunzwi had approached multiple medical practitioners in an effort to obtain documentation that could assist in alienating the child from her former husband, a claim that has intensified the seriousness of the case.

Dr. Kondo initially denied the allegations. In his warned and cautioned statement, he distanced himself from the disputed letter, describing it as fraudulent and denying any role in its authorship. He maintained that he had no prior knowledge of the businessman referenced and had never examined or treated him.

The State argues that the letter was intentionally designed to mislead the High Court, thereby undermining the administration of justice. Authorities say investigations have since expanded, leading to the joint charging of Hunzwi.

The case is considered high-stakes, not only due to its legal implications but also because the Medical and Dental Practitioners Council is reportedly conducting parallel proceedings into Dr. Kondo’s professional conduct. The outcome of both processes could carry serious consequences for those involved.

The criminal matter is set to proceed to trial on 3 April as both parties have been served within the 7 day notice period.
