The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the arrest of 79 suspects following a major operation targeting murder, robbery, rape, stock theft and environmental damage in Mazowe’s mining areas.
The operation focused on Storeys, Jumbo Mine and surrounding areas, where illegal mining and related crimes have been on the rise.
Police said the raids also aimed to curb land degradation, soil erosion and the destruction of railway, road and water infrastructure.
Of those arrested, four are accused of causing damage to railway infrastructure.
During the blitz, officers recovered 30 excavators, 10 generators, three submersible pumps, seven hammer mills, six windlasses and 20 water tanks.
Police also dismantled several shebeens and confiscated large quantities of meat, alcohol, illicit brews and groceries, which they say are fuelling criminal activity in the area.
Both foreign nationals and Zimbabweans were arrested in the Storeys area for alluvial mining, which police say has damaged water systems and agricultural facilities.
The ZRP said the force would continue to target criminal syndicates operating in mining zones.
“These activities are clearly contributing to criminal acts in the area and undermining infrastructure,” police said.
No further details were released on when the suspects would appear in court.
