Four bodies of artisanal miners have been recovered from a mine at Mamini, Umsasa Farm, in Mazowe.
Earlier this week, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) reported that five miners had been trapped underground since Sunday after a 20-metre-deep shaft collapsed.
On Wednesday, 1 October, ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that four bodies had been retrieved and taken to Concession District Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations.
The victims were identified by their families as Alton Sibanda (25) from Thlavati Village, Zhombe; Prince Gobvu (19) from Mhariwa Village, Mhondoro; Kenneth Mhandire (24) from Eastview, Harare; and Tapiwa Meskano (26) from Chikwaka Village, Goromonzi.
Commissioner Nyathi urged mine operators to prioritise safety, conduct regular inspections, and take all necessary precautions to prevent similar tragedies.
