Eight people, including the driver, were killed in the early hours of Saturday when a ZUPCO owned bus carrying 20 passengers was involved in a horrific crash along the Mutare–Masvingo Road.
The tragedy occurred around 2 AM at the 246-kilometre peg, near Mutendi Complex.
According to Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the bus was travelling from Beitbridge to Mutare when the driver attempted to overtake a haulage truck loaded with timber.
As an oncoming vehicle approached, the driver swerved back into his lane, sideswiping the truck. The heavy timber from the truck speared into the bus.
Added Comm. Nyathi:
“As a result of the crash, eight people, including the driver, died on the spot, while four others were injured.
“The bodies of the victims were referred to Masvingo General Hospital for post-mortem examination, while the injured were referred to the same institution for treatment.”
Commissioner Nyathi also revealed that the death toll from the Toyota Fortuner GD6 crash at the 46-kilometre peg along the Mutare–Masvingo Road on 28 August 2025 has risen to six, after two more victims succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment at Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital.
“It is sad to note that most of the accidents recorded between Friday and today were caused by overtaking errors on the part of drivers.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that motorists should exercise extreme caution on the roads and avoid overtaking when it is not safe to do so.”
