The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC), a subsidiary of ZESA Holdings, has said the public is not required to replace transformers or any other electricity infrastructure in the event of faults, nor to pay anyone to carry out repairs.
This comes after social media posts claimed that residents in Kambuzuma, Harare, were asked to pay to fix a transformer damaged by fire.
In a public notice issued on Thursday, 20 November, ZETDC said the matter is under investigation to determine the cause of the fire and verify the claims circulating online.
“We strongly urge the Kambuzuma residents and the public at large not to pay any individuals for service or material replacement.
“Such demands are illegal and must be reported immediately to our toll-free lines – Netone subscribers 08018888 and Econet subscribers 08080539.
“While ZETDC is responsible for replacing damaged equipment, the Customer Supplied Material (CSM) Scheme is available as an optional method to fast-track repairs during material shortages.
“Under the CSM scheme, customers do not pay ZETDC employees; they procure the materials, following a formal approval process, and are guaranteed REFUND in electricity units.”
