The ZiG month-on-month inflation eased to 0.4% in August, down sharply from 1.6% in July, according to the latest figures from the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZimStat).
Annual inflation for the local currency (ZiG) also slowed slightly to 93.8% in August, compared with 95.8% in July, though it remained higher than June’s 92.5%.
The slowdown in August was largely driven by more moderate increases in transport, school fees, communication, and clothing.
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for ZiG stood at 191.65 in August, up from 190.89 in July and 98.90 in the same month last year.
Month-on-month, ZiG food prices fell by 0.1%, while non-food items such as transport, utilities, and clothing showed only modest increases.
For US dollar transactions, prices remained largely stable. Annual USD-based inflation was 14.2%, slightly down from 14.4% in July, while month-on-month prices were flat at 0.0%, compared with 0.3% in July.
The USD-based CPI, which reflects a significant portion of urban spending, mirrored this stability.
A weighted Consumer Price Index, combining ZiG and USD measures, showed no month-on-month price growth in August, compared with 0.6% in July, with annual inflation under this measure at 27.6% — significantly lower than the ZiG-only figure.
