Harare City Council has urged residents to use larger buckets when flushing toilets to help prevent sewage blockages.
Engineer Simon Muserere from the city’s water department said water rationing has forced people to use small tins, which fail to push waste far enough through pipelines.
He noted that 60% of sewer problems are caused by poor flushing habits and improper waste disposal, while only 40% stem from infrastructure issues.
Muserere explained that bigger buckets help restore “self-cleansing velocity” in sewer lines, reducing the buildup of sand and debris that now remains trapped in pipes.
He warned that continued blockages are draining council resources, as costly machines and excavations are being used to clear pipes.
