A 29-year-old Harare woman has been arrested after police allegedly recovered BronCleer cough syrup worth an estimated US$2 000 from her home in Southlea Park.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said Talent Kurori was arrested on July 15 after officers acted on a tip-off and recovered 200 bottles (100ml each) of the codeine-based cough syrup, which was allegedly being kept and sold without the required registration.
BronCleer, commonly known as “Bronco”, has become one of Zimbabwe’s most abused cough syrups, with authorities linking it to the country’s growing drug and substance abuse crisis.
Kurori has been charged with unlawful possession and dealing in unregistered medicines. If convicted, she could face a fine, imprisonment of up to two years, or both, depending on the court’s findings.
Police have urged members of the public to desist from the illegal sale and misuse of medicines as the crackdown on drug and substance abuse continues.
