A Kombi driver and his conductor were arrested on Tuesday for allegedly kidnapping a police officer while attempting to evade arrest in Harare’s central business district.
George Mfuka, 24, and his conductor, Sonchess Tafadzwa Soche, 32, are reported to have forcibly taken Assistant Inspector Tashinga Mashiri along Julius Nyerere Way, driving him to Eastlea with passengers still on board at around 8 PM.
The incident began when George was seen dropping passengers at an undesignated point along Julius Nyerere Way.
Assistant Inspector Mashiri, accompanied by Constable Leeyer Mumba on Provincial Reaction Group duties, ordered George to drop all passengers, but he refused.
Mashiri then entered the Kombi, and Tafadzwa allegedly encouraged George to lock the doors before driving off with the police officer along Robert Mugabe Road towards Simon Muzenda Street.
Constable Mumba and other officers pursued the vehicle in a police car. Around 8.30 PM, George stopped along Chiremba Road to let passengers off, who had been complaining during the journey.
George and Tafadzwa were subsequently arrested and held at Harare Central Police Station under IR 100905.
