Two men from Mutare have been sentenced to 45 years in prison each for the brutal murder of Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services officer Tapiwa Mutyasira, 29, whose body was found dumped on the Mutare–Harare railway line in Chikanga.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said that between 3 and 4 March 2023, Brighton Gowero, 29, and Takunda Makoni, 21, acting with an accomplice identified only as Courage, who remains at large, assaulted Mutyasira with unknown objects and killed him.
They then stole his two mobile phones and left his body on the railway line in an attempt to cover up the crime.
Tragically, the victim’s body was later run over by a goods train, with the driver initially mistaking it for debris on the tracks.
A post-mortem conducted at Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital confirmed that Mutyasira died from polytrauma, sustaining multiple injuries from the violent attack.
