The High Court in Harare has sentenced, Byson Mwachande, 31, a tout from Mufakose, to 20 years behind bars for the murder of his friend and colleague, Michael Salimon.

The incident happened on 13 February 2025 at the Lyton Flyover.

Mwachande became angry when he saw Salimon sharing a plate of sadza with another colleague.

He demanded repayment for the sadza Salimon had eaten at his home earlier that morning.

The argument escalated when Mwachande insisted on taking Salimon’s US$20 share of the day’s earnings as compensation.

When Salimon’s colleague refused to hand over the money, Mwachande grew violent, forcing the two to flee towards the Workington industrial area.

Mwachande chased them in a pickup truck, caught up with them, and jumped from the moving vehicle. He struck Salimon once on the forehead with a 470-gram stone, killing him on the spot.

A post-mortem confirmed that Salimon died from a severe head injury, including a skull fracture and subdural haemorrhage.

Mwachande fled the scene but later surrendered to the police on 15 February 2025.
