HARARE- Former Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader cum preacher, Nelson Chamisa has come under fresh scrutiny following allegations that he was bribed with US$5 million to quit politics by controversial Zanu PF central committee member Kudakwashe Tagwirei.
An intelligence report leaked by an X account run by one Retired Lieutenant General, Winston Sigauke Mapuranga on Sunday claimed that Tagwirei paid Chamisa off to so that he does not take a leading role in opposing the Constitutional Amendment Bill No.3 of 2026 (CAB3).
Mupuranga claimed that the 2018 and 2023 presidential candidate took the money to a named Harare law firm for safe keeping and has already withdrawn US$4 million.
Chamisa’s ally Jameson Timba is cited in the repot as the source of the information that was allegedly shared with President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
“We make reference to Your Excellency’s update dated 09 April 2026, which highlighted increasing pressure from within opposition ranks to Nelson move Chamisa, citing his perceived
inability to effectively challenge the ruling Zanu PF party and his hesitation to take a prominent stance against CAB No. 3,” read part of the report.
“Recent information indicates that (DCP) leader Jameson Timba advised the asset (informant) that Chamisa’s political relevance has effectively ended.”
It claimed that Chamisa moved part of the money from the law firm following concerns that its movement would violate Zimbabwe’s banking laws.
“Timba mentioned that Chamisa accepted US$5 million from ZANU PF Central Committee member Dr. Kudakwashe Tagwirel,” the report claimed.
“However, US$4 million was later withdrawn after concerns were raised by senior partners at the firm about potential contraventions of the Bank Use Promotion Act.”
Mapuranga has been one of the leading voices on social media in opposition against Zanu PF and Mnangagwa to end the direct election of the president.
Zanu PF wants to extend Mnangagwa’s current term of office by two years.
The proposed amendments will also whittle down the power of the military, allow traditional leaders to dabble in politics and collapse the Zimbabwe Gender Commission, among other changes.
Many Zimbabweans, locally and abroad, opposition parties and churches have rejected the amendments.
Prominent opposition leaders that have take a stand against the bill include Tendai Biti, who formed a pressure group against the bill, The Constitution Defence Forum, Lovemore Madhuku, Job Sikhala, Jacob Ngarivhume and Timba.
Timba established Defend the Constitution Platform to challenge the draconian proposals.
Critics have raised concern over Chamisa’s silence in opposing the bill that will effectively end his dreams of taking over as president.
Some have suggested Chamisa, who had two million voters in the 2018 general elections, was paid by Zanu PF not to oppose the bill.
Last month journalist and political analyst Jealousy Mawarire leaked an audio of the opposition leader proposing an alliance deal with Mnangagwa.
Mawarire has also claimed that Chamisa was paid millions of dollars by Tagwirei in 2023 to take a sabbatical from politics and bounce back in 2033.
He claimed this was the reason why the CCC candidate did not challenge the outcome of the presidential elections in court.
Mnangagwa announced an inauguration date when Chamisa was still within time frame to appeal the polls which he claimed was rigged.
He quit CCC some months later after claimed that the party had been hijacked by Zanu PF and that marked the beginning of the collapse of the country’s leading opposition party.
While other opposition parties have joined hands to oppose the proposed constitutional amendments, Chamisa has remained mum, only posting cryptic messages on X that are difficult to understand.
In his long post, Mapuranga said the amendments presented an opportunity for Chamisa to fiercely relaunch his political career, and his silence raised questions.
“A huge corruption deal has caused democratic backsliding in Zimbabwe which is aiding CAB3,” Mapuranga wrote.
“This was achieved by bribing a top opposition leader Nero chamisa who received a staggering amount to the tune of US$5 million and necessitated laundered by one of the top law firms in Zimbabwe.
“Not speaking about the US$20 million that Nelson Chamisa pocketed as a payoff to go on a forced sabbatical and move go mute on active politics until 2030. The “Gods” have favoured mukomana……”
The leaked intelligence report claimed that the some Zanu PF members were not happy with Tagwirei and Chamisa’s alleged role.
“with the arrangement involving Chamisa and Tagwirei,” the report alleged.
“As a consequence, he suggested that Chamisa may now be exposed to an elevated threat level, including the possibility of assassination.
“This faction reportedly views Chamisa as a sell out who compromised his position and supported the 2030 agenda.”
It also claimed that all leading opponents of the amendments were now under surveillance.
