Government has installed an automatic weather station at Lake Kariba’s Control Tower. It is expected to improve early warnings, help guide rescue missions, and reduce accidents caused by sudden storms and shifting winds on the lake.
The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development says the station will let authorities “act proactively using accurate local weather data to save lives, coordinate rescues, and manage infrastructure sustainably”.
According to the Ministry, the system measures key weather elements in real time, including wind speed, wind direction and rainfall. With constant updates, authorities should be able to monitor conditions better and respond faster when the weather turns bad.
The Ministry described the project as part of wider efforts to modernise inland water transport and protect people who rely on the lake for a living. That includes fishermen, tourists and lakeside communities.
The Control Tower, which oversees activity on the lake, should benefit from the new station. It will give vessel operators and emergency teams better situational awareness.
In addition to improving daily navigation safety, the Ministry said better data will help manage key lake infrastructure, especially during heavy rain or strong winds.
The Ministry said the project is part of ongoing efforts to protect Lake Kariba’s users and to support the safer movement of people and goods across the water.
